Make NSW the Safest State

Make NSW the Safest State!

Our drug laws in NSW are failing. Decades of being ‘tough on drugs’ has done nothing to reduce drug use, but only further harmed our communities.

Prosecuting people struggling with drug issues only drives them further into addiction. We need a police-led diversion policy to make sure they get the treatment and support they need to recover.

Will you add your name to our call to make NSW the Safest State? Simply enter your details in the form on this page – it only takes a moment!

We are calling on the state government to:

  1. Create a new police-lead collaboration between police, health and social services to divert young people experiencing issues into more productive engagement
  2. Divert young people to treatment services like Ted Noffs Foundation
  3. Resource youth drug treatment with a comprehensive funding plan

It’s time for a new approach to tackle drugs. Add your name to the letter and support our call for safer, saner drug laws to make NSW the safest state.

Dear Premier Berejiklian (cc Police Minister Mick Fuller, Attorney-General Mark Speakman),

As you are aware, drug laws in NSW aren’t working to keep people safe. Two recent inquiries, the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Drug Ice and the NSW Coroner’s Inquest into the death of six patrons at NSW music festivals, found that a major overhaul of our drug laws is needed to prevent drug-related harm and deaths across the state.

The NSW Government has demonstrated its commitment to meaningful reform, and I applaud your willingness to have an honest conversation about drugs.

But prosecuting people who need help isn’t the answer. It only drives people deeper into poverty and addiction, while placing enormous strain on police and the courts.

We need a police-led diversion policy that supports police to divert drug users to health and social services, instead of forcing them to lay criminal charges against people in desperate need of help.

I ask the government to:

  1. Create a new police-lead collaboration between police, health and social services to divert young people experiencing issues into more productive engagement
  2. Divert young people to treatment services like the Ted Noffs Foundation
  3. Resource youth drug treatment with a comprehensive funding plan

Drug use is a symptom that we can only overcome by treating the root cause. Please introduce safer, saner drug laws and keep our communities safe.

Sincerely,
